A password-protected directory or area is a folder that could be accessed only if a username and a password are entered, so no unauthorized people can see its content. This function may be used for the main folder of a certain Internet site or only for a specific subfolder depending on your preferences. For example, if you are creating a new Internet site and you don't want people to see it before it's ready, you should restrict the access to it completely, and if you need only some people to be able to access certain files, you'll be able to password-protect only a specific folder, while the remaining portion of the Internet site could be seen by everyone. Either way, a “403 Forbidden” error page will appear in case the login details the visitor types in aren't right. Even a direct link to a file shall not work if any folder above it is password-protected.

Password Protected Directories in Shared Hosting

Setting up a password-protected area shall take no more than a few mouse clicks and a few seconds if you host your Internet sites within a shared hosting account with us. You won't have to do anything challenging - you will need to select a domain/subdomain, to select which folder under it should be secured, and then to type in the login name and password which will be used to access that folder. If a number of people need their own login credentials, there won't be a problem to make a variety of different usernames with access to the very same folder. All protected folders will appear with a padlock icon within the File Manager section, so you will always know where this feature is activated. If you would like to disable the protection function for any folder, you can deactivate it from the same section of the CP where you have enabled it.

Password Protected Directories in Semi-dedicated Servers

If you have a semi-dedicated server account with our company, you will be able to shield any content that you have uploaded through our protection tool. Its interface is as simple and intuitive as that of the Hepsia CP it's part of, so you shall not need to input any code at any time. You will only have to pick one of the domains/subdomains that you have in the hosting account and to select which folder should be password-protected - the website’s root folder or some folder below it. After that you can input the username and the password, which will be stored in encrypted form in our system, and you shall be good to go. The protection will be activated straightaway, so anyone that tries to access the freshly protected folder shall have to enter the correct login information. In cases where a number of individuals have to be able to access the exact same content, you can create a separate username for each of them.
